Press ReleasePrevent Heart Disease in Women: Take A WalkSOUTHBURY, Conn. - In February, walk for the health of your heart. That's the word from Charlotte Libov, founder of National Women's Heart Health Day, on February 1. "February is a great time for walking. First, there's National Women's Heart Health Day, on Feb. 1. But the entire month is also National Heart Month. This makes it a fine time to get into the habit of walking, a terrific way to help safeguard your heart," said Libov, who founded the special day four years ago to raise awareness of heart disease, the number-one killer of women. "Women often that they don't have the time to exercise. But you don't need to join a gym or devote hours a day to exercise - studies show that taking a brisk, 20-minute walk three times a week helps prevent heart disease," says Libov, who is the founder of National Women's Heart Health Day. She founded this special day to raise arwareness of heart disease, the number-one killer of women. Regular brisk walking also helps lower the risk of diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, all that are risk factors for heart disease, she noted. About 227,000 women will die from heart disease this year, nearly six times the number of women than breast cancer kills. However, surveys that show the risk heart disease poses remains unrecognized dismays, but doesn't surprise Libov. "For decades, all of the public education campaigns focused on men, so even when women do bring their concerns to their doctors, they are too often dismissed," Libov said. Libov became an award-winning medical writer after undergoing open-heart surgery. The is the author of "The Women's Heart Book: The Complete Guide to Keeping Your Heart Healthy" (Hyperion). She is also the author of "Beat Your Risk Factors", and other award-winning health books. She co-authored "The Woman's Heart Book", and "50 Essential Things to Do When The Doctor Says It's Heart Disease", also from Plume.
